Mariam Lakdawala was the winner for the First IFSO Integrated Health Scholarship 2018 from the entire Asia Pacific Region
Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker was invited to speak about "Medico-legal and social aspects of clinical practice" at the AXIS enclave in Bangalore on Dec 15, 2018. She addressed an august audience of more than a 100 diabetologists and cardiologists. The talk was extremely well appreciated.
Honoured to have had the opportunity to perform "Live Bariatric Surgery" and to serve as faculty at the "International Bariatric Surgery Conference and Live Operative Workshop" held at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana, Punjab on 21st and 22nd May, 2018 organised by Dr. Ashish Ahuja and Dr. Nain.

Doctors are not celebrities, but every doctor needs to be celebrated for the transformation that we bring about in our patient's lives. As surgeons, whatever surgery we perform, eventually it relieves people of discomfort, of pain, of misery and brings a smile on their face. As all other surgeries, bariatric surgery is also about transforming lives! The gist of my talk to more than 300 members of NIMA!

This is the first time in the history of medicine that a disease has reached epidemic proportions and yet is fighting to get labelled as a "disease". India is the 3rd fattest country in the world along with being the world's diabetic capital. What is even more surprising is that though bariatric surgery is the only method that leads to sustained weight loss in the morbidly obese, less than 1% of the eligible population is actually getting the benefit of surgery. This was the crux of my talk for general physicians.

Treatment of obesity is first about rebuilding bridges across the walls of weight based stigma, prejudice and discrimination. Common assumption is that obesity is a self inflicted choice and does not deserve treatment. Diet industry also tends to encourage the perception that weight is easily modifiable. Patients trying to lose weight experience increasing dissappointment with repeated failures at weight loss and tend to perpetuate negative perceptions about themselves . As a first brick in the bridge, we the healthcare practitioners need to challenge the idea of "self inflicted and non-disease nature of obesity". Step by step awareness needs to be created and those suffering from obesity must be extended the same empathy as patients who suffer from other diseases such as kidney disease or heart disease. Its time to take away the moral obloquy and stigma from patients seeking treatment for obesity

Best results are achieved when patients and doctors become partners and are equally invested towards working for better health of the patient. It is not as much about operating as it is about supporting and encouraging at every small step.
