Bariatric surgery is the only proven method for sustained weight loss in patients suffering from clinically severe obesity or morbid obesity. Bariatric surgery is not a short cut to weight loss. These patients have tried all other avenues multiple times and failed to lose weight. Surgery leads to massive weight loss over a period of 18 to 24 months. It is imperative to follow a healthy diet and exercise regime after surgery to maintain the weight loss in a healthy way. Morbid obesity is a disease and bariatric surgery is the only available treatment option at the moment.

Mariam Lakdawala- Bariatric Nutritionist with Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker talks about imp of follow up

Bariatric surgery needs teamwork. Surgery is a one time event in the life of the patient and surgeon has to lead by example in setting a culture of care in the unit. The ultimate success of any bariatric program is directly proportional to dedication of the diet experts and counsellors who handhold the patients pre and post surgery and resolve every tiny little problem faced by them. A bariatric team must have a culture to support in every possible way.. small or big!

As a parent I can influence one child, as a doctor probably a few hundreds but teachers have an immense power to be able to influence many generations. I believe that they are one of the biggest stakeholders of health in children. Schools are certainly not the root cause of childhood obesity, but they can definitely be a place for the “solution”. Schools can and must become an example where children learn lessons of a lifetime of good health! Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker – Pre bariatric surgery upper GI endoscopy

Upper GI Endoscopy is a must before any bariatric procedure. It is important to know if there is any reflux esophagitis, any ulcers or Barrette’s esophagus. UGI Endoscopy also shows us the presence or absence of hiatus hernia. In the presence of a hiatus hernia a Roux en y gastric bypass is the best procedure to be performed. An antral biospy for H. Pylori testing must also be performed and in case the biospy is positive, eradication of H. Pylori must be done prior to surgery. Any other abnormalities such as polyps, neuro-endocrine tumors etc may also be picked up during endoscopy.
